Transition Habitat Conservancy has over 4000 acres of conserved land in the BLM Barstow and Ridgecrest Desert Wildlife Management Area north of Hwy 58 and east of Hwy 395. This year we are seeking to inventory the status of tortoise activity on our lands and you can help.
Come out and join us on a weekend Burrow Blitz. You will be placed in groups where you will assist the team leader in finding tortoise sign This is a chance to work with biologists and land stewards to learn about our work in the desert and with the desert tortoise.
PLEASE READ OVER THESE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
You can choose to meet us on Friday morning and camp through Saturday or you can just come for the day on either day. There will be an orientation period each morning at 9 a.m.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN FOOD AND CAMPING SETUP. If you want to share food Friday night, feel free, we will tell tall tales and swap stories around the campfire on Friday night.
To participate in the surveys, you must have a vehicle with 4-wheel drive capability. The road to the campsite is passable by passenger car, but the locations we will be going to are on sandy and sometimes very rocky or hilly roads. There is limited space in team leader’s vehicles, so you might be able to carpool into the sites. Please RSVP beforehand so we can accommodate you.
You must be able to walk long distances on hilly and uneven ground.
DIRECTIONS: This is where we will meet for the orientation. If you are camping, you will find signs here that will direct you to the campsite, which will be nearby.
